Endangered Endemic Flora of Tasmania

I am currently developing a collection of botanical paintings, which express the exquisite beauty and uniqueness of Tasmania ’s endangered, endemic flora. The works are life size watercolour paintings of the islands rarely seen plants, and take each viewer on a visual journey into their intriguing and fragile world.

With each new composition I like to reveal the story of the plants existence. This always means travelling to the site where it grows to observe the other vegetation with which it coexists. For endangered species their environments are so important. If I can say something to my audiences about how beautiful these remnant pieces of bush or grasslands are, that helps to protect these botanical wonders, then my work has succeeded.

Many of the subjects have recently been rediscovered, are new species or have never been visually described.

This project is currently self funded and seeking sponsorship.

The Threatened Species Unit, Department of Primary Industries Water and Environment have kindly provided in kind support for these works.

The Artistic Process

Each composition begins by observing the plant growing in its natural habitat. Rough sketches, field notes and photographs all combine to enable work to continue in her studio. Plants are often redrawn several times before a final image is achieved and completed in watercolor.

Detailed observations and study under a microscope enable the structure and anatomy of each plant to be revealed.  The final paintings are fascinating nature studies, displaying an exciting fusion of both art and science.
